Accidents do Happen

Recent surveys showed that 75% of accidents in racing occur in training.

The army of stud and stable staff are the ones that are tasked with handling and breaking the lively Thoroughbred racehorse. Even the most well mannered and quiet horse can sometimes be unpredictable and accidents can happen anywhere at any time.

Whether at the races, in the stable or on the gallops the unthinkable can happen and one fall or kick can cause a lifelong injury – or at worst - paralysis or brain damage caused by a blow to the head.

Mr X. Aged 79 – 25 years in racing

Six strokes and one heart attack left Mr X with very poor mobility, so much so he could only get upstairs by going up backwards with his wife’s help.  It looked like they would have to move until Racing Welfare paid for a stair lift to be installed which has enabled them to remain in their family home
.

Mr X Aged 83 – 34 years in Racing

Mr X has had a heart condition since suffering a heart attack when he was just 39 years old.  His wife is in the early stages of Alzheimers.   Racing Welfare visited them and arranged a special stair lift to be installed.

Mr X – aged 59 a retired farrier

Very limited mobility meant Mr X was trapped in his home with no means to be able to get out.  Racing Welfare provided him with an electric scooter which has given him back his independence and freedom

Mr X – 61 year old single

Suffering from acute depression and self harms.  Lonely and isolated he now receives regular visits from us and is being successfully integrated back into community activities.

Ms X – disabled, divorced 40 year old woman with two teenage daughters

Living in a top floor flat in an area known for drug and alcohol abuse and suffering from acute depression, her daughters had spent considerable time in foster care.  In desperation, Ms X sought help from Racing Welfare and we were able to secure a move enabling her to recover the self esteem and confidence she needed to address many of her issues and become a supportive mother at last.
