There are a number of different ways that you can get involved with Racing Welfare and help racing's backroom staff. We have a number of different events and challenges throughout the year which you can take part in and raise sponsorship from running the London Marathon to taking part in our overseas treks. Browse our fundraising calendar for open events.
Alternatively, you can also organise your own fundraising event however large or small. We will be on hand to help you with the preparations, or volunteer to help us at one of our events.
As a fundraiser you can set up your own webpage with Justgiving enabling your supporters to sponsor you online from anywhere accross the globe. This service is extremely simple to do and also saves you having to collect up sponsorship money which can be time consuming, see their website www.justgiving.com and enter "Racing Welfare" to get started.
Organising Your Own Event or Activity
Whether you want to organise a big or small event, t his is a very good way of supporting us. It will require a lot of thought and planning before but we can be available to help you and offer advice along the way.
Things to consider:
- A date for your event. It is always worth checking that there are no other big events on that day in your local area as this may affect the people you want to invite.
- A venue. Be prepared to book well in advance if you are planning something in a local hall or sport centre.
- A Budget. You should have a rough idea of the amount you hope to raise and set your budget accordingly.
- Advertising. Approach local newspapers to help you publicise your event and put up posters in local pubs, post offices and noticeboards. If you need help with press releases then do contact us.
- Sponsors. Approach local businesses for sponsorship or to donate prizes for a raffle or auction. Ask a local printing business to produce flyers or posters at discounted prices in exchange for their details or logo on the flyer.
- Gift Aid. If you are being sponsored for an event, ask your donors to Gift Aid* their donation. This enables us to claim back the tax on their donation, 28p for every £1 donated. (*Gift Aid donations must come from a UK taxpayer
Ideas for Fundraising at Home
Get together with friends and family to organise an event in your spare time. Here are some ideas:
- Dinner Party. Invite friends and family round for a dinner party and charge them for tickets. A great excuse to all get together. You could also ask everyone to bring an unwanted gift from home and hold a fun raffle after dinner to raise some more cash, that way everuone goes home with a gift!
- Race night. Hold a racenight in your local pub or hall. Contact us for help or ideas
- Quiz night. Host your own Who Wants to Be a Millionnaire? Quiz at home or at your local pub. Charge an entrance fee for participants and put up a prize for the winner. You could ask the pub to donate the prize?
- Sponsored Event. Swim, slim, headshave – ask your colleagues and friends to raise sponsorship money for you in a fun way.
- Karaoke Evening. Ask a local pub to host one for you and charge people to get in or take part.
- Music Night. Hold a recital for friends or family. Ask the audience for an entrance fee and donations at the end.
- Cricket Match. Have a knockout contest and charge people to join a team. Charge admission to all your spectators and sell refreshments
- Dinner dance. Have a good band and good food and charge a good price. Organise a raffle and/or an auction.
- Bungee Jump or Skydive. Sponsor a friend or colleague to take a jump of a lifetime, or better still, do it yourself! Contact us to arrange skydiving.
Ideas for Fundraising at Work
- Bring a pound to work day. Simply ask all your colleagues to bring just a pound to work in aid of the charity, then collect together the money and send it to us.
- Jeans to work Day. Charge everyone a fee to wear their jeans to work or choose a colour theme for the day.
- Office sweepstake. Run a sweepstake on a big race like the Grand National or the Derby and charge for entries. Pull the horses out of a hat.
- Adopt a Trainer or Jockey. Each member of staff adopts a triner or jockey for the week, month, season and follow their successes with a points system for winners.
Volunteer Your Services
As a volunteer there are a number of ways that you can help and make a difference:
- Lend a Hand at an Event. Fundraising events always require extra pairs of hands on the day and can be fun to be part of. You may be required to help with a raffle or silent auction, taking bids or handing out prizes.
- Help on a Tradestand. We are often in need of extra helpers on our tradestand at events and on racedays. We sell a number of items of merchandise and give out leaflets. At Christmas we sell cards and Christmas puddings.
- Bucket Collections. We hold bucket collections at a number of different racecourses throughout the year and often need people to help out. This is a great way to get out to the races and socialise and meet new people.
Collection Boxes
Collection boxes are a very easy way of helping to raise funds for Racing Welfare. A sealed collection box can be displayed in a shop, pub, bar or reception area. If you would like to help in this way, please contact a member of the fundraising team to arrange collection of your box.
