Boxing Day was like any typical December day, COLD with a strong Northerly wind to add to the ‘flavour’ so to speak. Donned with a seasonal reindeer hat and shorts I braved the North Sea for an early morning dip. Now, this Boxing Day success was not my first but certainly the coldest and made more bearable on this occasion by the excellent turn out of the spectators and ‘dippers’. A big thanks to colleagues, friends and family who dipped (pardon the pun) in their pockets to raise money for Racing Welfare and the Lions Club.
I have taken a few enquiries over the last few months regarding stable staff wages and accidents in the work place. I would like to remind staff that they can obtain this information (and much more) from the ‘Wages and Conditions 2007/2008’ leaflet that is produced by the National Association of Stable Staff (NASS) formerly known as Stable Lads Association (SLA). I note that many staff do not hold this leaflet nor are they aware that SLA is now NASS. Please contact your relevant Welfare Officer who would gladly provide this information for you as it is an important reminder of your Conditions of Employment.
A few retired racing staff that I know have recently been awarded a pension (normally a lump sum ranging from small to larger amounts) because they took the step to find out whether they had one that a previous employer may have arranged e.g. a former trainer. It’s likely that you too may sense that a pension was set up for you many years ago and feel that this should be awarded to you if this is the case. If you would like to discuss this matter further then please contact your regional Welfare Officer for further guidance on how to pursue an application. |
