Lambourn marathon runners sweat for stable staff charity
Lambourn marathon runners sweat for stable staff charity Racing Welfare regularly benefits from the efforts of London Marathon runners in raising funds to aid their work in supporting Britain’s stud and stable staff. This year is no exception and four of the charity’s runners preparing to line up to start the gruelling 26 miles slog around the capital come from Lambourn.
Tessa Clark, Warren Greatrex, Aoife Sisk and Simon Clark are all well known faces around the village. Simon Clark spoke for all of the runners “We carefully considered which charity we would raise money for, however with our close associations with the racing industry we decided to run for Racing Welfare because they help to support all stable staff in Lambourn and throughout the UK”.
The potential hazards of working in racing stables was brought home all too quickly last week when one of Racing Welfare’s marathon runners from Newmarket, Martin Gear who works for Sir Michael Stoute, was kicked by one of his horses and suffered a broken skull and nose resulting in a seven hour operation. Luckily Martin is on the road to recovery and whilst he will miss out on London he hopes to run in the New York marathon in November this year.
The Lambourn runners have already nearly raised £4,000 for Racing Welfare, and some leading racing names have added to the sponsorship tally. Champion national hunt jockey AP McCoy wished the quartet good luck via their own charity web page, however for a man famous for his bravery on horseback he has described them as “lunatics who may be short of a gallop!”
