Racing Welfare launch Malton Fire Disaster appeal fund at Doncaster race course
Racing Welfare, the Jockey Club’s charity, is formally launching an appeal to aid those affected by the tragic fire in Malton last Saturday at Doncaster racecourse tomorrow (10th September 2009). The appeal has already raised over £10,000 and in the short term funds raised will go to help to support the families of Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson who were tragically killed and money will also go towards helping the other racing staff who were left homeless and lost all of their possessions in the fire. The Injured Jockeys Fund is also working with Racing Welfare in ensuring that all individuals and family members affected by the tragedy are supported.
In the longer term Racing Welfare are working with the families of those affected, trainers and other members of the horse racing community in Malton and nationwide to utilise the funds raised by this appeal to provide a lasting memorial to Jamie and Jan, with the possibility of a housing project to be named in their honour providing homes for Racing’s people being discussed. The Charity already provides 150 homes throughout the UK for those who work in or are retired from the racing industry.
The launch at Doncaster will announce a significant number of high profile donations from the Racing industry and will enable race goers to donate and to talk to some of the Charity’s welfare team who have been instrumental in helping those affected by this tragedy. A central fundraising hub will be set up in the main foyer at Doncaster racecourse from 11:00 on Friday and any race goer is encouraged to donate either on course or by sending cheques to Racing Welfare, 5b Commercial Street, Norton, Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17 9HX or calling 01638 560763.
