Racing Welfare is a charity that provides help and support to those who work, or have worked, in the horseracing industry. For many years, it has run a sports and leisure scheme for all people working in the horseracing industry. The provision of low cost sport centre membership has been made possible through significant funding by the charity.
During 2009, the charity reviewed the scheme and came to the conclusion that, by making the scheme universally available to all, charity money was not being targeted at those most in need. We noted many members of the scheme were more than capable of funding the full cost of sports centre membership, yet the charity's constitution only allows us to support those in need. We have therefore decided to change the terms of the scheme for 2010.
For 2010, membership of the sports and leisure scheme will be available to those who have suffered illness, injury, or disability and are experiencing financial hardship. Further details on how you may qualify for membership are provided in the attached sheet called "Guidelines for the Sports and Leisure Scheme 2010". An application form is also enclosed, so that you can apply for membership, if you feel that you might qualify.
We recognise that the "old" scheme brought many benefits to its users and understand that there will be much disappointment at the loss of a universal sports and leisure scheme. We are working with other industry bodies, including the British Horseracing Authority, to see if an alternative discount scheme can be developed.
If you have any questions about making an application, please call 01638 560763 or contact your local Welfare Officer.
Yours sincerely
